The NWPA Healthcare
The Northwest PA Healthcare Industry Partnership is a collaborative effort between the Northwest and West Central Workforce Investment Areas. There are nearly 50 employers represented in the partnership—from the major regional medical facilities to long-term care facilities and individual doctor offices. The partnership has met the following goals and objectives in the last program year:
Pipeline Development and Education Outreach—Through health education programming, the Healthcare Industry Partnership has provided educational sessions on healthcare career opportunities to over 4,000 K-12 students in the past 12 months. The partnership has reached an additional 1,500 prospective employees through career fairs and non-school settings. The partnership—in conjunction with the Northwest PA Health Education Center—conducted career education camps throughout the region to highlight a variety of healthcare workforce opportunities.
Incumbent Worker Training—The Healthcare Industry Partnership has secured $1 million in state funds over the past 2 Program Years to provide training to thousands of incumbent workers. As one employer partner stated, “incumbent worker training has afforded our business the opportunity to invest in the healthcare industry and serve more people in better ways. With this in mind, it allows for better retention and dedication in our employees.” In addition to training being done by individual employers, the partnership hosted consortium training for 150 employees in supervisory skills for the healthcare setting.
Industry Research—The partnership has collected important career-related research to help companies recruit and retain workers and improve their overall competitiveness, including completion of a Knowledge-Skills-Ability study, Career Ladders and Lattices research and a target occupations forecast. Moving forward, the Healthcare Industry Partnership has established a subcommittee structure to increase the work capacity of the partnership and will be working to establish a sustainability plan for future funding.
